Uppsala University

Uppsala University
Uppsala University (UU) was founded in 1477 and is one of 6 universities in Sweden.

The department of Medical Sciences is the largest department at the Medical Faculty at UU with 179 employed subjects and >300 collaborators at the University Hospital of Uppsala.

The main task is to provide biological samples from a number of well characterized cohort studies consisting of both population-based samples, as well of patients with acute coronary syndromes. In the population-based PIVUS study, (http://www.medsci.uu.se/pivus/pivus.htm) including 1016 subjects all aged 70 years at inclusion, a large number of physiological markers of subclinical CV disease have been measured (e.g. carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaque occurrence, three different tests of endothelial function and another three tests of arterial compliance, echocardiography (LV mass, systolic and diastolic function), MRI including measurements of myocardial infarcts by Gd-contrast, LV mass and systolic function, whole-body MRI angiography and ECG). Most of these investigations were repeated also at 75 years and now a 80-year reinvestigation is on-going. CV events are recorded prospectively. In this cohort, established and novel biomarkers will be evaluated in subclinical disease states.
